Many families today have become more environmentally conscious with respect to the products that they are buying. Many are now well aware of the damage that some synthetic products can cause to their immediate environment and to the global environment as a whole. This is especially true in families with young children who are very susceptible to pollutants and harmful chemicals. Because of this, many companies and manufacturers have become keen in developing new products with less environmental impact, translating into a “green revolution” of sorts. One interesting area where this “green revolution” is also taking place is in the floor refinishing industry.
Traditional floor refinishing methods have almost always involved sanding and the application of harmful chemicals on wood floors. Dust particles and heavy fumes were generally considered to be part and parcel of the entire refinishing process. Many parents and homeowners are thus hesitant sometimes to have their floors refinished because of the mess and health concerns that the process might entail.
A newer method known as dustless refinishing, however, proves to be a much greener option. This newer method does away with the dust and hazardous chemicals and instead uses floor refinishing products that have low volatile organic compounds (VOC) or are VOC-free. Dustless Floor refinishing also referred to as green floor refinishing, is a more environmentally friendly and healthier option that is now offered by many floor professionals or specialists. Because of this green option, families can now still choose to keep their fantastic hardwood floors without exposing their children and other family members to the health hazards previously associated with hardwood floor refinishing.
The advantages of dustless refinishing, however, do not end there. Not only is it a greener option, it also costs less than traditional wood refinishing. Plant-based oils and other environmentally-friendly wood refinishing products can often be bought for only a fraction of the cost of refinishing products with high VOC. Dustless refinishing also takes a shorter time to be completed than other traditional finishing methods. In many cases, an entire floor can be refinished within one day. This is a vast improvement from the traditional method, which may often take several days to complete. The lower completion time also adds to the cost-efficiency of this greener method since it translates into lower labor costs for the homeowner.
